Private Historian Led Expeditions

I’m Steve Carney. I served as a U.S. Army Historian for over 20 years, including as the Command Historian at Arlington National Cemetery, before founding Azimuth Executive Tours. I design and lead private tours and expeditions for travelers who want to understand the places they visit, not just see them.

HISTORIC CITIES

Washington, Philadelphia, Charleston, Boston, New York, and the cities in between. I built my career interpreting the historic landscape of Washington, and I bring that same approach to every city, including the architecture, the institutions, and the people who shaped them. Most visitors see the monument. We work the story behind it. I am a licensed Washington, D.C. tour guide, which the city requires for serious work in the capital.

BATTLEFIELDS

Cowpens, Antietam, Gettysburg, the Little Bighorn, and many others. I’ve led more than 700 battlefield tours across the United States and abroad. Each expedition is built around the ground itself: where commanders made the decisions that determined the outcome, what the terrain demanded of them, and what the cost actually was.

CULINARY AND BEVERAGE

Wine country in Virginia, the Finger Lakes, Napa, and Sonoma. Bourbon in Kentucky. Cocktails in the historic bars of Washington. Hidden speakeasies. Food and drink make sense when you understand the region’s agriculture, immigration patterns, and the wars that defined it. I take you through both sides of the story.

How an Expedition Works

Every Azimuth expedition starts with a conversation. There are two ways it usually goes.

If you already know what you want, we have one call to confirm I understand the goal and the particulars: how many days, how many people, what you want to see, what you want to skip. Then I plan it and we execute.

If you’re not sure yet, the call is a discovery conversation. You tell me what interests you, I propose two or three concepts you can choose from, and we co-build from there. Pricing, payment, meals, transportation, and tickets to specific sites or events are all part of that conversation.

Either way, every itinerary is built individually. Nothing is scripted. Nothing is fixed in advance.

Why Azimuth Executive Tours?

I retired from federal service after a career that included serving as Command Historian at Arlington National Cemetery. I’ve led more than 700 battlefield tours in the United States and abroad. At Arlington, I conducted tours for heads of state, royalty, members of Congress, and foreign embassy officials.

What I have learned over the years is that the audience matters and the setting matters. Interpretation has to meet both. That is the standard I bring to Azimuth.

Most private tour offerings are recycled itineraries with a guide pointing at things. That is not what I do. Every Azimuth expedition is designed around the client. The interpretation is original and the research is mine. When you stand on the ground where the decisions were made, the story becomes clearer and more immediate. That is what defines an Azimuth Executive Tour.
